What is Act 1?

Act 1 is a "34-point comprehensive plan for improving Vermont's sexual abuse response system." The legislation includes significant new protections for students against sexual exploitation and sexual violence.

What is Act 60?

Act 60 is the 2015 update of the child abuse and neglect protection laws intended to address gaps in Vermont’s Child Protection system. This new legislation went into effect on July 1, 2015.

Everyone who works for the Colchester School District is mandated by law to report suspicions of child abuse or neglect. Recent developments in Vermont have tightened the rules and procedures related to this law. Please review the materials and be sure that you understand how to monitor our students for signs of abuse or neglect; how to report any issues to a supervisor; and how to follow up as needed with the Department for Children and Families.

Please review the following documents pertaining to Act 1 and Act 60:

  1. District Policy F10: Child Protection
  2. Act 1/Act 60: Improving Vermont's sexual abuse response system

Harassment, Hazing and Bullying are serious issues. The Colchester School Board will consider a revised policy this fall. Faculty and staff will be updated as needed once the policy has been revised.

The main points for all staff to consider include:

  • It is critical that you address any suspicion of behavior that may be hazing, bullying or harassment.
  • If in doubt, report anyway. It is better to over report than to under-report. Often these behaviors happen in different times and locations. By reporting to your the officials designated to receive complaints (check with your building administrator) you can help "connect the dots" for a pattern of behavior that may constitute a policy violation.
  • Documentation is very helpful. Please document what you saw or heard, where you saw or heard it, the date and time.
  • We expect that new forms will be available soon to help you with documentation.

Please review the presentation and policies below to familiarize yourself with the definitions. Make sure you know has been designated in your building to receive complaints.
