Emergent Reading Program
The Emergent Reading Program is an introduction to reading. Three times a week each child is read to and expected to be read to at home that evening.
This is how it works: 1. At home, re-read the book in your child’s folder. 2. Hand the book to your child and have them read it to you, at first they may need help, (that is O.K.!) 3. Go over letter cards or sight word cards (it is fine to simply read the sight words to your child at first.) 4. Write a short positive note in the notebook.
In January students are either given letter cards or sight word cards. As the students master the list they have they will move to the next list. Students who have letter cards will move to sight word cards when they have mastered all letter names and sounds. The most important thing to remember is to have fun reading with your child!
