Regarding Student Education Records

In the Colchester School District, a cumulative record is maintained for each student.  This record contains verified information of recognized importance and may be used only for the benefit or welfare of the student.  It includes information necessary to provide the best possible conditions for the student’s education.  Collecting and maintaining data to assist students in present and future endeavors is done in a way that will not impinge upon a student’s privacy or other rights.

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) affords parents and students over 18 years of age (“eligible students”) certain rights with respect to the student's education records.

You have the right to:

  • Inspect and review the student's education records within 45 days of the day the school district receives a request for access.
  • Request the amendment of the student's education records that the parent or eligible student believes are inaccurate or misleading.
  • Disclosures of personally identifiable information contained in the student's education records, except to the extent that FERPA authorizes disclosure without consent.  (NOTE: The Colchester School District may disclose appropriately designated “directory information” without written consent.  Please click here for more information on the release of “directory information.”)
  • File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the school district to comply with the requirements of FERPA:
