Welcome
to the Malletts Bay School Library Homepage
We
strive to provide friendly and helpful services.
We offer a collection that meets the grades 3 through 5 needs of the
Colchester educational community. Our
hours of operation are 8:15a.m. to 3:15p.m. Monday through Friday.
The
Malletts Bay School Library houses over 15,000 books, videos, audio books,
vertical file information and periodicals. Materials are checked out for two
weeks with the exception of reference materials, and current periodicals. However a material must
be returned before another is checked out.
The student may borrow up to 2 materials at one time.
If your student is working on a special project, we would be happy to
make an agreement about additional books. Materials
may be renewed if no one else is waiting to borrow them.
We do not charge fines for overdue materials.
Students will be informed of their overdue books.
We do ask for a replacement fee for lost or damaged books.
In addition to all of the lovely materials found in the library, we also
have activity tables and a puzzle table where the students may choose to
participate. Please
send a note in with your child if you would like to borrow a book to read aloud
at home. You are also welcome to
come in and select a book, for your child. Students come to the library once a week. If you have Library this quarter your classes are 45 minutes long. If you have Guidance this quarter your book exchange time is 20 minutes long. The students may also visit the library anytime 8:15-3:15 Mondays - Fridays with their teacher's permission. During library classes the students gain information about books, authors, genres, characters, series, reference skills, and appreciation of life long learning using a variety of teaching techniques. Programs
The Red Clover Award program is a state-wide children’s choice picture book program for grades Kindergarten through fourth. There are ten picture book nominees that vary widely in subject matter and style. Every student hears the following stories throughout the year. The students compare stories, language, and artistic styles. In April every student has a chance to vote for their favorite Red Clover book. The state then compiles the votes and names the winner in May.
The fifth grade students may participate in the school vote, but I will not be able to send their votes to the state.
Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children’s Book Award Program (DCF) is held in grades fourth through eighth in the state of Vermont. This award is in honor of Dorothy Canfield Fisher, the late Vermont author. They honor 30 contemporary authors, who have written a story within that last two years, as nominees. The students need to have read or heard five DCF books to be able to vote for their favorite in the spring. The winner is invited to Vermont to receive his/her award. A few of the students from around the state are invited to watch the presentation. This year’s nominees:
Dorothy Canfield Fisher Books 2011 - 2012
The MBS Library purchases the DCF titles that are appropriate for the fourth and fifth graders. If you feel strongly about any of the DCF books, there is a DCF blog where you can share your thoughts.
