ILLNESS TIPS:
What's Going Around?
Chicken Pox:
MBS has had 3 confirmed (1
pending) case of Chicken pox recently. As we prepare to enter summer
break, please keep in mind the incubation period for chicken pox is 7-21
days. This means about the time we end school, the next cases could
arrive. All cases at our school were "break through" cases, meaning
students had either vaccine or a previous history of having chicken pox,
thought they were immune, but had a "break through" case. In these
cases, chicken pox do not look like the classic fluid filled pox and may
resemble more of a bug bite. These spots keep appearing over the course
of several days in several body locations, they scab over and dry up.
Children do not feel ill and in most cases do not have a fever. It can
be very difficult to tell if you have chicken pox or something else like
mosquito bites. If you notice rashes or bumps on your child, please
have it checked out, do not send them to school unless you are sure that
it is not chicken pox. Please contact your child's physician for
further clarification.
*Headlice: Itchy scratchy
heads at the start of the year are very common after a summer of camps &
sleep overs. There is no evidence that it spreads at school. Please
keep the nurse informed if you are treating for headlice at home & if
you have any questions feel free to call us.
*STREP THROAT: We have
multiple cases of strep throat in all houses reported in the first week
of November. Symptoms include headache, fever, stomach ache and sore
throat. (Very similar to flu). Unlike flu there is usually no cough
associated with it. If you are unsure if your child has strep throat,
call your doctor. Children with confirmed cases of strep throat will
need to be on antibiotics and out of school until they have completed a
full 24 hours of antibiotics.
*Stomach virus: Diarrhea,
vomiting and/or stomach cramps lasting 1-2 days with our without fever.
*Cold virus: Stuffy or
runny nose, headache, cough with or without a fever lasting 5-10 days.
If symptoms are mild and there is no fever, students may attend school.
If there is a fever or symptoms are severe enough to not allow your
child to participate fully in school, they need to stay home. Call your
doctor with any concerns.
NOTE:
ALL STUDENTS WITH A FEVER, VOMITING, OR DIARRHEA MUST STAY HOME UNTIL
THE SYMPTOMS HAVE RESOLVED FOR A FULL 24 HOURS WITHOUT THE USE OF ANY
MEDICATION.
Illness Calls
All calls informing the
school of an absence
should be made to the nurse at 264-5904,
not the front office. This will provide the school and families with accurate information and
guidance regarding illnesses.
Be prepared to leave
your child's name, teacher, reason for absence. Homework requests
can also be left with the nurse.
REMINDER: ALL CONTAGIOUS ILLNESSES
SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE NURSE
Chicken pox, Strep Throat,
Pertussis (whooping cough), coxsackie (hand, foot mouth disease) and
Fifth's disease are examples of illnesses you should notify the nurse of
asap. |
ASTHMA
Many MBS students have inhalers for asthma that are
used only occasionally. During the spring, the PE department has a
fitness challenge test which coincides with our recess long trail walks.
This extra running may require the use of an inhaler that otherwise
would not be needed. If you suspect this may occur, it is best to
contact your physician early, get an extra inhaler and order as
described in the medication procedure. (useful links and medication
