ILLNESS TIPS:

What's Going Around?

* Stomach Virus:  Sudden onset vomiting and/or diarrhea without a fever with on and off stomach aches sometimes preceeding the vomiting/diarrhea for 24-36 hours.  Symptoms last 1-2 days.  Students should be out of school for 24 hours after the symptoms have resolved.  Rest/fluids/ bland foods and avoiding dairy foods are advised.

*COUGHS:  Deep lingering coughs lasting 7-21 days or longer.  May develop into or aggravate asthma.  In some cases has developed into bronchitis or pneumonia.  Coughs that last longer than 1 week should be evaluated by a physician or sooner if they interrupt a child's sleep/daytime activities.  Pushing fluids is the best defense.

* Spring Allergies:  Sneezing/runny itchy eyes and nasal congestion without fevers or other cold symptoms.  If your child suffers from some of these symptoms push fluids and try an over the counter allergy medicine recommended by your pediatirician such as claritin or zyrtec each night before bed to relieve the daytime symptoms.

*Headlice:  Itchy scratchy heads at the start of the year are very common after a summer of camps & sleep overs. There is no evidence that it spreads at school.  Please keep the nurse informed if you are treating for headlice at home & if you have any questions feel free to call us.

 llness Calls

All calls informing the school of an absence should be made to the nurse at 264-5904,
not the front office.  This will provide the school and families with accurate information and guidance regarding illnesses.

Be prepared to leave your child's name, teacher, reason for absence.  Homework requests can also be left with the nurse.

REMINDER:  ALL CONTAGIOUS ILLNESSES SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE NURSE

Chicken pox, Strep Throat, Pertussis (whooping cough), coxsackie (hand, foot mouth disease) and Fifth's disease are examples of illnesses you should notify the nurse of ASAP.

NOTE:  ALL STUDENTS WITH A FEVER, VOMITING, OR DIARRHEA MUST STAY HOME UNTIL THE SYMPTOMS HAVE RESOLVED FOR A FULL 24 HOURS WITHOUT THE USE OF ANY MEDICATION.

ASTHMA

Many MBS students have inhalers for asthma that are used only occasionally.  During the spring, the PE department has a fitness challenge test which coincides with our recess long trail walks.  This extra running may require the use of an inhaler that otherwise would not be needed.  If you suspect this may occur, it is best to contact your physician early, get an extra inhaler and order as described in the medication procedure. Physicals

Colchester School District strongly recommends a copy of your child's physical to be on file at their school.  Please provide a copy of your child's most recent physical to the school nurse.

MEDICATION TIPS:

ALL MEDICATIONS SHOULD BE TAKEN AT HOME IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

When medications need to be administered at school, the following must occur.

  • ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE BROUGHT TO SCHOOL BY AN ADULT (students may NOT bring medications to school including over the counter medications)

  • Medications Must be in a pharmacy labeled container.

  • A Written physician order must be provided on any form used by the physician or use the school district form to the left.

  • ALL MEDICATIONS MUST BE PICKED UP BY AN ADULT AT THE END OF THE USE OR END OF THE YEAR

IMMUNIZATIONS

Colchester School District requires a copy of your child's immunizations to be on file with your child's school nurse.  Please provide a copy of your child's immunizations or a signed waiver if  immunizations have been withheld for medical, religious or moral reasons.
