The Special Education Support Services are available to students at Malletts Bay School who are identified as eligible under the Individuals With Disabilities Act originally implemented in 1974 and revised periodically by the U.S. Congress. Most students receive support in the regular education environment with consultation and/or service through the special education department. Some students receive support outside of the regular education environment in the Learning Center at MBS for small to large parts of their school day. A very small percentage of students receive services individually outside of their regular classroom for some to all of their school day. MBS currently has four full time special educators and one full time speech language pathologists. There are also a variety of para educators working at MBS each school year to help meet the individual needs of identified students. Students primarily receive services in reading, writing, math and language. Some students will also receive support in fine motor, gross motor, social and behavior skills. Parents sometimes have concerns about their child and their child's achievement in school. A parent may suspect a child has a specific disability. If this is the case, please refer to the Colchester School District Student Support Services home page and click on Laws and Regulations. Then scroll down to Special Educations Regulations and find the various categories of disabilities to review the potential disabilities that a child may be experiencing. A parent may be concerned about their child's current achievement in reading, writing, math or language. Typically, students eligible for special education support services are functioning two years or greater below the level of their same grade peers. If this is the case for your child, please contact your child's classroom teacher to discuss your concerns. Your child's classroom teacher can facilitate the contact with the special educator working with them that school year. |
