All About Me

Hello!  My name is Colleen Marshall and I have been a second grade teacher for ten years.  I started my career here at Union Memorial School and I have loved every minute of it!

I spent the first eighteen years of my life in Endicott, New York.   I graduated from the University of Scranton, in Scranton, PA., with my teaching degree in 1997.  After graduation, I moved to Burlington, Vermont because my family was transferred here with IBM.  I have enjoyed every minute in this beautiful area and I can't imagine living anywhere else!

I have been happily married to my husband Matt for 6 years.  I have a two year old daughter named Sarah, and she keeps us both running!  We recently bought a house in Colchester and are busy making it feel like "home".  In 2005, I completed my Master's Degree as a Reading Specialist from Saint Michael's College.  I enjoy taking classes and learning new things that I can use in my classroom.

My Philosophy of Education

My philosophy of education is very simple.  I believe that all children are individuals and work at their own pace.  Every child presents different learning styles and it is my job to successfully meet their needs in my classroom.

Daily Routine and Schedule

Let me tell you a little about our daily routine. Our morning routine is designed to promote a sense of community within our classroom. We start the day with our morning meeting, which is a great way to connect with friends and start our day with a positive attitude!  We sit on the rug to say hello, read the morning message, review calendar, and complete a fun activity that reinforces a current skill being taught. Next, we transition right into our spelling time (S.W.R.) which stands for Spelling, Writing, and Reading.  We talk about different spelling rules and brainstorm words that highlight these rules, complete word sorts, and practice all kinds of word building activities.

Then we transition right into reading time.  We settle down by reading a story or chapter book and then we move right into our language arts block  Students read a variety of grade appropriate texts and complete reading group assignments. Students work on individual tasks at their own appropriate learning level and pace. We practice many different forms of writing including response journals, story starters, and even some poetry. I also use many hands-on activities and games that engage each student as well as reinforce our second grade reading curriculum.  Lunch and recess end our morning activities and it let's everyone stretch and relax before our afternoon begins.

We start our afternoon with math time. The Colchester School District adopted the Everyday Math Program in grades K-5. It is an engaging series that spirals important concepts throughout the year. They practice these concepts daily in their math journal pages.  I supplement many lessons with hands-on games and activities.  During math, we also eat a quick snack.  Now we travel to our daily special (see our schedule posted below)

Writers Workshop is right after our special. We work hard to express our thoughts and ideas on paper and we study various authors to help us get started.  We complete many types of writing such as small moments, how-to's, nonfiction reports, and reflective essays.

We end our day with theme time, which is our social studies and science time.  The themes in second grade  consist of many interesting and intriguing topics such as the Friendship Olympics, balance and motion, the Alaskan Iditarod dog sled race, plants, rocks, and nutrition.

Homework is a daily part of our routine. Each night the children are expected to read 10 minutes, as well as practice their spelling rule and complete a math sheet. Each assignment is reviewed in class before the children take it home.

Parent volunteers are strongly encouraged to become involved in our class. Please visit again!
