The Union Memorial School library serves a population of 200 kindergarten to second grade students. All students have a scheduled weekly class visit for literature enrichment and information skills. Judy Flanagan, our full time librarian or Donna King Johnson, our part time library assistant, are always willing to help students and teachers find the materials they need. We love to "book talk" books and hopefully turn the UMS kids into lifelong readers. One of the programs we participate in is the Red Clover Book Program sponsored by the VT Center for the Book. We learn about authors by celebrating author's birthdays and reading their books. We also read books about people from around the world. Our goal is for the library to be an exciting place for UMS students to visit.

Our mission is:

  • Promote literacy and a lifelong love of reading and books.
  • Ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information.

"When I look back, I am so impressed again with the life-giving power of literature. If I were a young person today,      trying to gain a sense of myself in the world, I would do that again by reading, just a I did when I was young."
