Music

Welcome to Music at Porters Point School

The Music program is taught by Ms. Martie Mutz, Music Educator.  Students in First Grade and Second Grade come to Music class once a week for 45 minutes.  Students in Kindergarten come to Music class once a week for 20 minutes.  Students are exposed to and experience the elements of music (melody, harmony, rhythm, timbre, form, style) while they SING, DANCE, PLAY, LISTEN TO and CREATE music.  The Colchester Music Curriculum is based on the nine National Standards for Music Education.

National Association for Music Education

Porters Point students will be performing a whole school musical on Wednesday, April 11, 2007 and Thursday, April 12, 2007.  Half the school performs on Wednesday and the other half of the school performs on Thursday.  This year our program is entitled How Does Your Garden Grow? which was created by John Jacobson and John Billingsley.  All students learn the songs.  There are many opportunities for speaking parts, movement sequences and solo singing which are offered to First Grade and Second Grade students.  Practice for these parts occurs during music class, lunch recess and possibly one or two after school practices.

Many parents inquire about private lessons for their children.  "When is the right age to start?"  " How do I find a music teacher?"  "Private or group lessons?" Ms. Mutz will usually refer parents to the Vermont Youth Orchestra Association web site.  There is a music directory listing teachers, music stores, camps, and other useful information. They will send you a free directory upon requests.  This is a good place to start answering some of those questions!
