Welcome!! We will have a wonderful year in 1st grade.
Here is a description of what our day looks like.
The children will begin each day with Morning Meeting. We greet and build our community of learners at this time. SWR is our spelling, writing, reading program, where the children work
with writing letters, sounds, word families and sight words daily. Writing Workshop is a time the children are exposed to what good writers
do and engage in the writing process on a developmental level. Read Alouds are the time we share wonderful literature and work on
comprehension strategies. Literacy Stations are when the kids read both
independently and in guided groups. They
work with words and go to thematically-based centers. Math is done using the Everyday math program. You will see the parent connection with our Everyday Math Homelinks book. Social Studies and Science themes are incorporated throughout the day and
activities are taught at the end of the day.

Discipline
I believe that each child will be a responsible and important part of our community of learners by following these rules:
Be safe
Be kind
Do your best
I have high expectations for children to follow
these rules and give many opportunities for them to practice/role play them.
At times a child may need to 'take a break', where a child
will need to visit a separate, quiet area to calm down before rejoining the
activity. I will always process this with that child and have them
identify a plan of action for the future. I will share these frequent
visits with parents. I truly believe we need to be a partnership to
support your child in and out of school. The more we work together the
more consistent our expectations will be.
Home/School Connection
Your child needs to bring in a daily Home/School
folder. Please check it everyday to see what your child has done and read
any important notes. I will write a newsletter each week or two to cover
what we're doing in each content area and important reminders. Your child
will have homework throughout the week. I will send home your child's Homelinks
math homework on Tuesday's and Friday's. I will color in the assignments to be
completed with your child. This is to be returned the following school
day. I will also begin our 1st Grade Home/School reading Program where
your child will bring home a leveled book each Monday to read 2x to you before
returning it on Friday.
