Now that we are in Second Grade you will see that our responsibility for practicing skills and doing homework is increasing!
Like many classrooms we do have some routines that help our days go smoothly. Our schedule has really changed this year and I am still working out some kinks! It can be tricky to follow so be sure to ask your child each day!
We will still look forward to starting off our day with a Morning Meeting. It is here that we greet each other to welcome us all to a new day. We enjoy a fun activity such as a short game we all can play or singing a happy song.
We will still have SWR time. Here we will learn many new words. Our words are now more from families that we should know! We will send home a list of words each week! It is homework to study these words at home each night!
We will still have a morning snack. We are all trying very hard to have something healthy to eat.
If you can come visit during our Literacy Block you will see children reading in small groups, reading quietly in our classroom library, working independently on a reading project or working on publishing on our computers. Mrs. Bissonnette says that we are expected to read at home at least 20 minutes every night to support what we are learning during this block of time.
We will still be using the Everyday Math program. We are introduced to many new and exciting concepts, which we build upon throughout the year. Everyday Math calls this building a spiral. We also do some problem solving and many hands-on games that help us understand all the new things we learn. We have Homelinks that we bring home a few nights a week. These give us extra practice and also help our parents know what we are doing in Math. Always send the Homelink back to school each day. Even if you can't do the homework that night! Just write a short note to Mrs. Bissonnette and send it in! She understands!!
We will still look forward to a quiet story together. We sure enjoy having visitors read to us when they can! Our schedule is:
Mon: Library (bring in those books to
exchange for new)
Tues: Art (we do wear aprons, please expect
we might still get messy)
Wed: Music (we'll be singing and dancing)
Thurs: P.E. (Don't forget my sneakers)
Fri: P.E. (Sneakers again!)
A quick look at our schedule might look like this:

Please don't forget that we love helpful visitors! We hope the children will
be spending more time on the computers researching and publishing. We will
need parents/volunteers to help us with that! We will be using programs to
help us learn our home row keys called "Ultrakey" and we will be using a
publishing program called "Maxwrite". We now have roaming laptops that we
bring to our classroom to publish, edit, save, print, search the internet for
information, and many other uses for our computers.
Be sure you are reading each night and keeping sharp with your math skills!!
Thanks for learning so much about our classroom! If you have any questions be sure to e-mail Mrs. Bissonnette at bissonnetted@csdvt.org.
