Welcome to room 3 at PPS! We start each morning with Morning Meeting. We greet each other and practice a fun activity that builds social skills, responsibility and teamwork. We read the Morning Message and share news of the day. Our units of study in 1st grade include Butterflies, Friends, Family, Human Body, Weather, Gingerbread, Winter Holidays, Animals, I Love to Read and Write, Chicks, and Night Sky. We will practice Writers' Workshop, Readers' Workshop and SWR which is Spelling, Writing and Reading. In SWR we focus on letter formation, sentence structure, word families and sight words. During our Literacy Block the children listen to a story and participate in guided reading for small group instruction. They quiet read and work independently on a reading project or Working with Words activities. We will focus on an Author of the Month throughout the year. The children will read many of that author's books, do various activities and visit the author's website. We use the Everyday Math program. Children bring home math homework called Homelinks on Mondays and Wednesdays. Here is our specials schedule for the year:

Every June we end the school year by going to Project Inside Out which is held at a local summer camp. Kids participate in 4 different activities and/or projects such as tinwork, weaving, golf, canoeing, scrapbooking, hats, pillowmaking, candles, artists' books, recorders and so much more! At lunchtime, children can swim in Lake Champlain or play games. On the last day of school we have Field Day, a BBQ and enjoy listening to our friend, Jon Gailmor and his songs.
