Hands Around the World...

A year long celebration!!

Students in the Lighthouse worked in small groups to paint these beautiful lighthouse panels. Tempera paints were used.

The lighthouses are representative of Vermont lighthouses.  Can you pick out the Colchester Reef Lighthouse?  The north and south lighthouses on the Burlington Breakwater?

Michael and Alison made this beautiful poster to celebrate our school -wide theme.

This year MBS students and staff were involved in giving projects during the Holiday season. Our annual food drive this year for the Chittenden County Food Shelf  was organized by the Fifth Grade Advisory Council. Their goal was to collect a ton of food.  Collection efforts yielded over 1800 pounds. Their giving spirit and enthusiasm surpassed a ton. We are so thankful for all the students and families that donated food for this very worthy cause.

A giving tree in our lobby generated over 100 items that were distributed to many children helping to keep them warm as Mother Nature has blanketed us with cold and snow.

The staff at MBS continued the giving tradition by purchasing books for their fellow staff members in a Secret Santa format that were then donated to the Burnham Library and distributed to families in need.  Approximately 70 books were added to their collection and distributed to Colchester children.

All of these events are part of our school wide theme “Hands Around the World”.

Students from the Greenhouse participated in a variety of activities to demonstrate their learning about six holidays - the Jewish holiday of Hanukkah, the Hindu festival of lights called Diwali, Winter Solstice, St. Lucia's Day in Sweden, the Mexican celebration of Los Posados, and Chinese New Year. The lessons and activities were part of the school wide theme of "Hands Around the World".

On Thursday, March 20th, 2008 the Malletts Bay School Fifth Grade chorus performed at the Heineberg Senior Center, in Burlington. The chorus sang a variety of patriotic songs, and the song Danny Boy, especially for St. Patrick’s Day. They also sang Let There be Peace on Earth, These Green Mountains, Simple Gifts, Edelweiss and In the Cool of Winter for their appreciative audience at the center. The MBS Fifth Grade chorus is made up of 55 students and is under the direction of Miss Sheila Clark, Music Teacher.

MBS students have been learning a variety of world songs, games, and dances during music classes corresponding to the "Hands Around the World" theme.  Fifth grade classes have been learning a traditional Russian dance called the Troika during music classes.  These are some pictures of Mrs. Buswell's class in the midst of doing the lively Troika in groups of three.
