Dear Students and Families,

Welcome to Third Grade!! I’d like to give you some information about things you may be wondering about.

Snacks: Students should bring a nutritious snack to school. Candy and soda are not allowed. If they forget or are unable to bring a snack, I do have some snacks in my classroom that I supply myself. Sometimes it is drained though, so students should try to remember to bring their own snack. Snack drinks are available to purchase from the kitchen. Your child’s lunch account will be charged for this. If you’d like to send nutritious snacks such as raisins, fruit or peanut butter crackers to replenish our supply, they will be gladly accepted.

Water Bottles: I allow students to have water bottles at their desks during the school day. Hydration is important to keeping healthy and focusing. Students should only fill bottles with water, no juice, flavored waters, or Gatorade type drinks. Bottles should be taken home frequently to be washed as well.

Homework and Notices: Notices will be sent home in your child’s homework folder. When we begin homework your child will have homework every day except Friday. Most nights this will be Word Study and Math. They should have written their homework in their Student Planner. This should come back to school the next day. I do not check these to see that students have done this unless it becomes a problem. Also, you do not have to sign this planner unless homework becomes a problem. If your child does not do his/her homework, they will have a few days to make it up. If your child has trouble with their homework or other circumstances prevented them from finishing, please write a note to let me know so that I may help them with it.

Homework Passes: For every 10 homeworks that students turn in on time they will receive a homework pass. This pass may be used in place of one homework and should be turned in with the homework page at the time that the homework is due. Some students in the past have saved this for days when they know they will be busy. At the end of the year I allow students to “buy” things from my treasure box with unused homework passes. This is a great idea!

Birthdays: If your child has a birthday during the school year, please feel free to send in treats. If their birthday falls in the summer you may send in snacks on their half birthday. These will be marked on our calendar so that we can recognize everyone’s special day.  We will share them during snack. This is not required.

Lunch: Each child at MBS has a cafeteria account. Families deposit funds into this account, so that all meals are prepaid. Children then purchase meals electronically, using a PIN number. Families may make deposits online at www.myLunchMoney.com, or by sending cash or checks to school in an envelope that has their PIN and name written on it. (checks should be payable to Colchester School Lunch Program) Breakfast is also available beginning at 8:15 AM.

Changes in after school departure: A note is required if your child is being picked up or taking a different bus after school. Please let me know if your child’s after school plans do not involve riding a bus home. For safety reasons, students will be sent home in accordance with their usual departure schedule unless different instructions are provided in writing.

I look forward to our year together!!

Home Reading Program

The Vermont Standards and Learning Opportunities require that all Vermont students read 25 books each school year. Additionally, children should read books from different genres of literature. In an effort to meet these requirements, we will be reading several books in school and have developed the following home reading program:

At the beginning of each month students will choose a book (see type of literature required for each month below).

Once students have selected a book, they will need to have it approved by the teacher prior to reading it. This is to ensure that the book is at an appropriate reading level and is the correct genre.

Students should read the book throughout the month and not wait until the last minute.

Finally, a writing assignment must be completed. This will be assigned on the approval date for each month.

A few final thoughts . . .

Please keep this schedule handy throughout the school year as a reference!

Your child may need help managing their time on these long-term projects.

Students may get a book approved BEFORE the approval date! This could give them extra time to read the book, if needed.

A general guideline is to spend 2-3 weeks reading the book and 1 week working on the project.

Students should plan out their writing before they start working on it.

FINALLY . . . have fun! Reading should be enjoyable and exciting. Helping your child manage his/her time will make this reading fun and enriching.
