Ms. Powsner’s and Mrs. DiGrande’s Book Report Assignment September 7, 2007 Dear Parents, As classroom teachers, we are always trying to find ways for students to read more literature. The Vermont Standards and Learning Opportunities state “students should read a variety of types of literature, fiction and nonfiction (e.g. drama, essays, folklore and mythology, fantasy and science fiction…). {Standard 5.8} Also, “Students comprehend and respond to a range of media, images, and text for a variety of purposes (e.g. Reading for pleasure as well as reading to develop understanding and expertise). This is evident when students: a. read at least 25 books a year, choosing high quality materials from classic and modern literature. {Standard 1.4} To help students achieve these goals, we plan to have the students do a monthly “at home” book assignment. At the beginning of each month, we will assign a certain type of book, for example a mystery or biography. We will also assign the type of book activity that will need to be completed. The students will need to get the book approved by us at the beginning of each month. We want to ensure that the students are reading books appropriate to their reading level. We will make sure the students are aware of the date these book activities are due each month. Students will be asked to present their project either in a small group or to the whole class so they can practice oral presentation skills and listening skills. The students’ final book activities will be assessed and that grade will be figured into their Reading grade on their report card. Our hope is that the students will enjoy these monthly reading assignments. For your information, here is a list of the assignments for the year:
