Flip-flaps is a special, each-to-make
project that offers the fun of a hands-on activity, and a hint of
secrecy or surprise. This month’s book project will also help you
organize some of the main elements of your story (characters,
setting, problem, and solution) in creative, colorful way. To
create your fantast flip-flap, simply follow these directions.
Materials
you will need:
·
12’’x18’’ sheet of white construction paper
·
Scissors
·
Pencil
·
Crayons, colored pencils, thin markers for outlining
Directions:
1.
Fold the construction paper in half the long way, or hot dog style
(see diagram below).

2.
Open and fold the paper in half the short way, or hamburger way.
3.
Now keep the paper folded and fold in half again the short way.
4.
Next, open the folded paper into the original full sheet. Fold back
in half the long way as in step #1.
5.
To create the flaps, cut along the small folds at the top half of
your paper, just to the large center fold. You should have made 4
flaps to flip!
Now
you are ready to create:
OUTSIDE
1.
Across all 4 front flaps, illustrate and color a large scene
appropriate for the cover of the book. It’s the first thing viewers
will see, so make it eye-catching! Be sure to include the title and
author of the book across the front. Sign your name to the front to
give your self credit for such a great job!
INSIDE
2.
Top flap #1- Label this flap. Characters, and list the main
characters of the story. Include clip art, symbols, a border, etc.,
to enhance the flap.
3.
Bottom #1 – Draw/color a scene involving the main characters of the
book.
4.
Top flap #2- Label this flap, Setting, and write a caption
explaining the setting(s) of the story. Again include clip art,
symbols, etc.
5.
Bottom #2 – Draw/color an illustration of the setting of the story.
6.
Top flap #3 – Label this flap, Problem, and write a caption
explaining the problem occurring in the story. Include a border,
symbols, etc.
7.
Bottom #3- Draw/color an illustration of the problem.
8.
Top flap #4 - Label this flap, Solution, and write a caption
explain the solution to the problem in the story. Include border,
symbols, etc.
9.
Bottom #4- Draw/color an illustration of the solution.
Remember
to read all the above directions carefully. Be creative, colorful,
and neat. That’s it! You’ve just created your first fantastic
fantasy flip-flap!
